Cut from the Same Cloth: The Quilters of Gee's Bend
Abstract
My folkgroup website focuses on four aspects: area history, women and their quilts, rise in national attention, and legacy of the quilts and Black women quilters of Gee's Bend and how they created functional blankets from found or repurposed materials that also served as “vehicles of memory." Starting during pre-Emancipation, their unique style and technique are owed to their geographically-isolated location and which resulted in a national phenomenon when viewed through a white art collector lens. This transference moved their art from esoteric Black functional folk craft to exoteric American fine art and is still inspiring artists today.
